Montgomery Planning Commission recommends five properties for rezoning, approves development plan for new movie theater

MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The Montgomery Planning Commission voted Thursday to recommend five properties to the city council for rezoning and approved seven development plans, including one for a 13-screen movie theater off Chantilly Parkway.

The commission recommended rezoning property at 330 Ray Thorington Road for qualified commercial use, 40 acres off Alabama Highway 293 for light industrial use and property at 2544 Bell Road to qualified commercial use for a high-end bicycle store and office. The three cases were held over from the commission’s January meeting because there were not enough members present for a quorum.

The commission also recommended rezoning property at 3029 and 3031 Rosa L. Parks Avenue for use as a coin laundry and property at 1311 E. South Blvd. for use as a car lot, beauty shop and office.

Commissioners tabled rezoning proposals for 21.47 acres on Brewer Road and 45.26 acres on Pike Road at the requests of the presenters.

The planned Carmike Cinemas theater on Chantilly Parkway near Home Depot will be 56,681 square feet and could open by Thanksgiving, according to the presentation Thursday.

The commission also approved plans for a recycling center for municipal waste at 1551 Louisville St., a new building for Energen Credit Union in the 2900 block of Chestnut Street, an addition to the Alabama Trucking Association building on Halcyon Pointe Drive, a Newk’s Express Café on Vaughn Road, an addition to the Mr. Pool building on North Eastern Boulevard, and an addition at Stivers Ford on Eastern Boulevard.

Planning Director Robert Smith said the development plans had previously received zoning approval.

The commission also approved a recommendation to the Montgomery City Council to rename Key Street to Centennial Way, Brassell Street to Centennial Circle, parts of Smythe Street to Percy Drive, and parts of Watts Street to Hank Way in the Plaza at Centennial Hill development.

In officer elections, the commission picked Buddy Hardwich to succeed Kippy Tate as chairman and Stan Snyder to replace Hardwich as vice chairman.
