We invite you to join us for the Microsoft #BuildFor2030 Hackathon, an opportunity to focus your attention and resources on growing as a changemaker, and creating solutions that will make a difference, in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Getting started

Start by joining the Microsoft #BuildFor2030 Hackathon to get important updates throughout the event and prepare your submission.

Then review the participant guide - we walk through the key steps to building a diverse team, registering, hacking, and submitting your project - so that you can have a successful #BuildFor2030 Hackathon experience. 

After you've joined and when you're ready, register your team. Click on ‘Start Project’ and fill out basic project details and questions R1-R10 under ‘Additional Info’ as outlined here. By registering, you can unlock access to solution building resources and sales acceleration services to grow your business.

Requirements

What to submit

  • A solution that addresses at least one of the #BuildFor2030 challenge areas; and must be developed primarily using Microsoft technologies.
  • The solution must be either newly created or, if the published solution existed prior to the Hackathon Submission Period, must be significantly updated after the start of the Hackathon Submission Period.
  • Your submission must include:
    • Your Partner Organization and your PartnerID (find it here: aka.ms/mpn_id)
    • An attestation that your team members(s) engaged with at least one resource from the #BuildFor2030 skilling library during the hackathon and how the knowledge and skills gained were applied in the submission. 
    • All the required fields on the “Enter a Submission” page of the Hackathon Website including:
      • Information about the selected challenge statement, project development, Microsoft technologies used, and potential impact.
      • A text description that should explain the features and functionality of your Project.
      • An image representing the Project submission. This may be a team photo or logo.
      • An optional video that highlights the value of your solution being developed and how it addresses the #BuildFor2030 Hackathon challenge area statement you chose to solve. This may include a presentation or walkthrough of how the solution works, features, target users, etc. Videos should be less than 3 minutes and meet recommended guidelines within the official rules. 

Entry materials must be in English of if not in English, an English translation of submitted materials, including the demonstration video must be provided. 

Your final entry must be submitted by 11:45 P.M. Pacific time zone, November 22, 2022. Please do not wait until the last minute! Microsoft is unable to accept any entries after the submission deadline.

Judging Criteria

  • • Build for impact:
    Does the submission make or create something, leveraging Microsoft technologies, that is tangible that can be shown or demonstrated, going beyond an idea?
  • • Address the challenge:
    Does the entry address a Hackathon challenge statement, and present a clear and relevant solution that drives positive impact in the world (such as greater inclusion, equity, sustainability, resilient communities etc.)?
  • • Customer or community focus:
    Is the entry clear on who the solution is built for? Does it provide a compelling solution for the customer/ user/ community?
  • • Business value:
    Does this project provide business value? For example, does it enable businesses to meet environmental, social, governance (ESG) goals, attract new users, improve employee or customer experience, increase revenue, reduce costs etc.?
  • • Feasibility:
    Does the project have a reasonable chance of success or a possible pathway forward to implementation and delivery to market?
  • • Inspiration and energy:
    Does the idea bring inspiration, energy, excitement, fresh perspective, an innovative approach, or delight?
  • • Inclusion and sustainability:
    Was the solution built with inclusive and/or sustainable design in mind? Did the team consider who is excluded from the solution being built? How was input from the diversity of customers intended to use the solution considered?
