What is a PBI file?

PBI files mostly belong to PC-BSD by iXsystems. PBI files are installation packages characterized as compressed files which were designed for the PC-BSD operating system, where they contain setup files and the appropriate libraries necessary for the full and proper installation of the operating system. Additionally, these PBI files start up the PC-BSD installation wizard when they are opened, acting similarly to any setup.exe files included with many Windows programs as they are both classified as executables utilized to install the software.

  • Main Usage: PBI files are used to install the PC-BSD operating system, a Unix-like desktop-based operating system which is built from the FreeBSD operating system; a variation of the original and first Berkeley Software Distribution operating system. PBI file software packages are usually installed within their own separate directories, where all the libraries and setup files are contained. The development goal of these PBI files is for the installed programs to be completely self-contained, so that in the case that the libraries within the system change or are manipulated, the software packages will be largely unaffected.

How do you open PBI files?

You need a suitable software like PC-BSD to open a PBI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PBI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PBI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to solve problems with PBI files

  • Associate the PBI file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open installation packages. Because only the current version supports the latest PBI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the iXsystems manufacturer website after an available PC-BSD update.
  • To make sure that your PBI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
