Hello, Victor, We were looking at opportunities for improving the Windows build infrastructure. Can we discuss this in our upcoming BUILD SIG meeting on June 8th? Let us know if this works for you. Can you invite the relevant engineers from Microsoft to this meeting?

I'll add this to the agenda of the meeting too, but wanted to make sure you get a chance to see it.

Thank you

Hi Mihai,

Thanks for reaching out so that I see this. Can you explain briefly what you're looking to improve in the Windows build infrastructure for TF and how Microsoft can help? Are the improvements for better compilation times?

Thanks,
Victor

Hi.

Sorry, should have added these details on the first email. The main thing is that our DevInfra team is very small now compared to last year and we don't have much Windows expertise. So we're investigating several ways to make progress on Windows build/test/performance issues. We were currently thinking of one of

1. adopt the Pytorch model where Microsoft builds the Windows wheel
2. require WSL for Windows users of TF and basically serve the Linux package under WSL

There could be other alternatives too, we can discuss these at the SIG Build meeting, I think, together with positives and negatives of the methods above.

Thank you

Hi Mihai,

Thanks for explaining the scenarios. Chai (cced) will follow up to see how Microsoft can help with this.

Thanks,
Victor

Thanks for the meeting today. I think we can build on our shared goal of increasing TF adoption on Windows. We'll get back to you on the topic.

One of the meeting notes on this topic during the last SIG Build community call on 6/8 is that there will be a follow-up call separate from the regular SIG-Build call to continue our discussion on Windows build ownership. Has that happened?

I'm not able to find that meeting request on my calendar, only the regular SIG call on 7/13.

We may want to bring additional people from our side into that call, so please let me know if it's still the plan.

Thanks, --Chai.

No, that hasn't happened. We are waiting to hear back from your side first.

Should we do a status update on this in the next SIG Build meeting on 7/13, then schedule a separate meeting afterward?

Best,
Penporn

Hi Chai,

Thank you for the quick reply! We got feedback that we can just set up the separate meeting now.
Would your side be ready before the next SIG Build sync? If so, would the following slots work for you?
  • Tuesday, 6/29 3-4pm PT
  • Thursday, 7/8 2-3pm PT
Thank you!

    Hi all,

We would like to set up a biweekly meeting to continue the discussion for at least the next few months. Is today's time slot (Mondays 1:30-2:30pm PT) good for everyone?

One of the open topics today was about CUDA build support on Windows. Neither side (DirectML / TF) has the expertise to own CUDA Windows issues. Would it be possible to hear from Nvidia in the next meeting?

Hi Penporn and Mihai, please feel free to set up a meeting with Justin and myself to go over the set of engineering issues on the Windows build that we may be able to help with.

As discussed in the meeting in the past few weeks, we think the Windows build is important from the engineering perspective, and that the plug-in architecture should allow every team to be more effective in their respective device while sharing a common official host framework. To achieve that goal, we are willing to help improve the engineering fundamentals of the Windows build, and will be open to contribute our work if needed.

Hi Clarke, sorry about the trouble you're having with posting, I'll try to respond to your message here:

    >Schedule meetings in January to discus how the MS side could help with build issues
Thank you very much for the offer, we are currently starting our WSL investigation so a sync up meeting in January would be helpful.

Do either of the following timeslots work for you and your team:

    Tuesday January 11, 9am ~ 9:30am PST

    Wednesday January 12, 9am ~ 9:30am PST

    Tuesday January 18, 9am ~ 9:30am PST

    Thanks!

Douglas, happy new year to you and the rest of the team!

Following up here as we now have some unexpected conflicts with the Jan 18th slot. Would the 9 to 9:30 AM slot work on Thursday (1/20) or Friday (1/21)?

    Thanks,
    Clarke

Hi Clarke - thank you again for the offer but we are actually making good progress on WSL !

We may take you up on your offer of help, but let's skip the meeting next week.

    Thanks!

Hi Douglas, thanks for the update on your WSL progress. We still want to find time to talk and understand where thinking has progressed around the Windows build of TensorFlow. We’ve started work on TF 2 support and understanding the status of the Windows build is important to our plans.

Specifically we’re currently blocked from making progress on our DirectML PluggableDevice and are looking for PR support. An engineer on our team, Patrice Vignola, has submitted these PRs that we’re looking for engagement on:

    Thanks,
    Clarke

I'll leave this part to Douglas :)

Re: PRs: Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have responded on the PRs. Apologies for the delay!

Hi Clarke - thanks for your support & we think Windows is important too!! After discussing with the team, Austin and I would like to add this topic to the next SIG Build meeting for us to share the ongoing work with partners like Intel as well as update the community on WSL2 support within TF 2.8. Austin will post details about the next SIG Build meeting on TF Forums, here: https://discuss.tensorflow.org/c/special-interest-groups/build/12/none

Thanks & talk to you then!

Douglas, sounds like a plan. Based on Austin's last post I see the next slot is slated for February 1st at 2 PM PT, we'll plan to attend that slot.

Penporn, thanks for taking a look at the PRs!

    Thanks,
    Clarke

Adding Austin to this thread as a follow up from the last SIG Build meeting.

Douglas, I know you had to miss the last SIG Build meeting, but can we talk through the update you planned to discuss the last time around? Since the next SIG Build meeting is on Tuesday (3/1). Or is there a better forum for that discussion?

    Thanks,
    Clarke
