Business value

Waste disposal creates emissions as items decompose, are incinerated, or undergo any other industrial process required to remove waste. As a result, organizations are required to account for their GHG emissions in scope 3 category 5: Emissions from waste in operations. This category accounts for any waste that is removed and handled offsite, as opposed to waste that's handled as part of operations onsite.

Organizations are coming up with new and innovative ways to deal with waste, which means we need to accommodate flexible but standardized accounting and reporting practices for this category within Microsoft Sustainability Manager. Enabling organizations to track both materials disposed of and disposal method is a core value addition for this feature.

After implementation, organizations can bring in waste data, track waste partners, track disposal method and materials, and calculate as required based on standards. One out-of-the-box standard will also be included.

  • Data model
  • Activity data ingestion
  • Calculation models
  • Build-out of reference data for disposal method, materials, and implementation of industry standards to support this method
