BENGALURU: Oracle is learnt to have laid off nearly 100 employees in India, part of a global restructuring effort underway to gear up its cloud offerings. The changes come after two of its top executives – Thomas Kurian and Amit Zavery -- quit to join Google. Oracle’s fresh round of layoffs appears to be more than an annual redundancy exercise that lets go off under-performers.

Sources told TOI that software developers, quality assurance and documentation professionals were impacted by the layoffs. “Some employees were asked to come for the meeting with their laptops, an indication that they would be asked to surrender their laptop and sign off,” said a source on condition of anonymity.

Layoffs are happening in the US too. Some 500 people are said to be impacted there. Many employees expressed their concern on layoff discussion board thelayoff.com. One of them said, “It's been 1:1 meetings all week in IDC..." When TOI contacted Oracle on the layoffs, the company’s spokesperson said, “As our cloud business grows, we will continually balance our resources and restructure our development group to help ensure we have the right people delivering the best cloud products to our customers around the world.” . Oracle counts India as their largest delivery centre outside the US, employing 38,000 people. The company, which clocked $40 billion in 2018 revenue, employs 1.4 lakh people globally.

Oracle is making a big push into the cloud, reducing its exposure to the hardware and software businesses to compete with players like Google and Microsoft. The Oracle cloud offers a suite of integrated applications for sales, service, marketing, HR, finance, supply chain and manufacturing.
