India’s most water-stressed cities

Chennai and Kolkata are the world's most water-vulnerable megacities, according to a WWF study. India’s auto hub ranks first and West Bengal’s capital second in a list of 20 megacities facing a water crisis, while Mumbai ranks 11th and Delhi 15th. The shortage is a result of mismanagement of river systems and shrinking of wetlands, which are being lost at thrice the rate of forests. Chennai — which was rocked by devastating floods in 2015 — is facing a water crisis that's worse than Cape Town’s drought last year, says WWF's chief water official.
