COUNTDOWN TO LAUNCH! 🚀 At 10:44 pm tonight at the Arnhem Space Centre, history will be made as Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA) conducts Australia's first commercial #space launch! This is the first of three NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration launches in July with ELA, and a key moment in the start of Australia’s commercial space launch industry! I landed in Darwin at 1 am this morning, and in a few hours will continue the journey to the Gove Peninsula and then on to Arnhem Space Centre to watch the launch. As a previous space launch safety officer at Vandenberg Air Force Base (now Space Force Base!), I was part of the launch crew for some pretty cool launches (and landings!). But I have to say, tonight’s launch is really special, and I feel so fortunate to be able to witness this first for Australia! 🇦🇺 As one of the Director’s of ELA’s Board, I’ve been able to get a glimpse into the intense work and dedication of the ELA team to get to this point, and I know they are intensely focused right now on the final preparations for a safe and successful launch tonight. I’m excited for the ELA team, for their customer, NASA 🇺🇸, for this incredible moment for Australia - and for what’s to come! Sovereign access to space is a critical element of a nation’s space capability, and tonight we get to watch as Australia lifts off into this new territory! University of Wisconsin XQC (X-ray Quantum Calorimeter) is the first of the three rocket launches with NASA happening on June 26th at 10:44pm (payload pictured). Its purpose is to observe the Galactic soft X-ray bulge and attempt to determine its nature and emission mechanisms. The night sky glows with X-ray light coming from all directions and much of this X-ray light is produced by the interstellar medium, which includes hot gases filling the space between the stars.
